Ribrik: “Edike Ayisyen Ayiti, e Ayisyen nan Dyaspora : Educating Haitians in Haiti, and Haitians in Diaspora” (2017 – 2021) --Voicemail trascription of E. W. Védrine, August 31, 2021).

We notice that many Haitians don’t know how to make a temporary shelter. It's something easy. If you are in the countryside, and you have access to small trees, if you have a yard…  depending on how many trees you have (whether they are trees bearing fruits, grape vines that already have creepers). Nou remake anpil Ayisyen pa konnen kòman pou yo fè yon abri pwovizwa. Se yon bagay fasil. Si se an pwovens ou ye, epi w gen aksè avèk ti pyebwa, si w gen lakou… depan ki valè pyebwa ou genyen (kit se ab fritye ou pa, pye rezen ki gen tan gen lyann).
If you look at the image above also, it becomes easy to have an idea how to make a temporary shelter. There may be different models. People in the province already have access to dry palm leaves, coconut leaves, latànye fran (bourbon palm) leaves to cover can be put on it. Si w gade imaj anlè a tou, li vin fasil pou gen yon ide kijan pou fè yon abri pwovizwa. Ka gen diferan modèl. Moun an pwovens gen aksè deja a tach1, fèy kokoye, fèy latànye fran pou kouvri l, epi tou yo kapab met kouvèti plastik sou li.
When looking at the picture’s content, it is in the shape of a cylinder (like a tunnel). It is made up of trees; it's natural. That way, if you have a large yard, you can put your chairs… and other things in it. You can do this not only during cyclones, but also before cyclones where you can sit under it for cooling. Lè w ap gade sa ki nan foto a, li fèt an fòm silenn (tankou yon tinèl). Ou kapab fè l non sèlman pandan siklòn, men tou avan siklòn kote w kapab chita anba l pou (pran) frechè.
You can hang your hammock there to sleep. So from this picture, we believe many people can have a general idea of the different types of temporary shelters they can make, especially young people for example, who are very creative, where they can create different models of temporary shelters. You can also make it with palettes. Ou kapab kwoke hamak ou ladan pou dòmi. Donk, apati foto sa a, nou kwè anpil moun kapab gen yon ide jeneral diferan tip abri pwovizwa yo ka fè, sitou jèn yo pa egzanp, ki trè kreyatif, kote yo kapab kreye diferan modèl abri pwovizwa.  Ou kapab fè l tou ak palèt.
It’s not something that will take 2 hours to build. Thus, people don’t need to pile up in a crowded place, sleep on the streets, wait for tarpaulins to be brought to them, and continue to get wet in the rain. Whereas in your yard, once you have a space everyone can make 2, 3 temporary shelters (depending on how many family members). One second you can go and get  wood to make it, or if there are already have some existing trees that can be used as poles. You are assured that if wind blows nothing will break. Se pa yon bagay k ap pran 2 è d tan pou konstwi l. Konsa, moun pa bezwen ap anpile kò yo yon kote pil sou pil, ap dòmi nan lari, ap ret tann prela y ap pote pou yo epi ap kontinye fè lapli mouye yo. Tandike nan lakou w, yon fwa ou gen yon espas tout moun kapab fè 2, 3 abri pwovizwa (depan ki valè moun ki nan fanmi an). Yon segond ou kapab al chèche bwa pou fè l, oubyen si gen kèk pyebwa ki egziste deja ou kapab itilize kòm poto. Ou gen asirans ke si van vante pa gen anyen k ap kraze.
Even if you don't have trees in your yard, you can go and find wood. You use posts that go into the ground to a certain depth. After that, you can go and look for bamboo poles, or poles from bayawonn trees.
You can make a cylinder shelter (round), what you see in the picture, or you can also make one in a triangle shake (2 crossed poles) as we can see some huts (made up of dry palm leaves) in the countryside, for example. Ou kapab fè yon abri an silenn (an wondèl), sa w wè nan foto a, oubyen tou ou kapab fè youn an fòm triyang (2 gòl kwaze) menm jan nou konn gade yon seri joupa (an tach) an pwovens, pa egzanp.
All of this is how you can help yourself after the earthquake, and for any hurricane instead of piling up your body on the street sleeping if your house is gone. So, you can use your yard, where you already have enough space to do so.
Be careful also to not cook under it (to avoid it from catching fire if there are dry straws). It is best to keep fire away from it. -- If you have tools, they all can be in it. If you don't have a folding bed, you can use posts (crossing them with ropes) to put your mattress on them. Fèt atansyon tou pou pa fè manje anba l (pou evite l pran dife si gen pay sèk). Li ta mye ke w elwaye dife de li. Si w pa gen yon kabann pliyant, ou ka itilize pikèt bwa (kwaze yo ak kòd) pou met matla w sou sou yo.
You can see an open front door. During the day, you can attach pieces of cloth as curtain. In the evening, you can close it with a temporary door you can create, and sleep soundly. Even if it rains, the fact that you have dry palm leaves or pieces of sheet metal, plastic mats, you can get to cover it against rain you won’t get wet. Ou ka wè yon pòt antre ki ouvè. Pandan lajounen, ou kapab atache moso twal kòm rido. Leswa, ou ka fèmen l ak yon pòt tanporè ou ka kreye, epi w dòmi san pwoblèm. Menm si lapli vini, lefèt ke w gen tach oubyen moso tòl, tapi plastik, sa w kapab jwenn pou kouvri l kont lapli ou p ap mouye.
Everyone who reads this article can share it with their contact list, on facebook, and on all other social networks so that more people would read it, and keep circulating it. We will see how we can help ourselves without waiting forever for someone to come and help you. Chak moun ki li atik sa a kapab pataje l ak lis kontak yo, sou fesbouk, e sou tout lòt rezo sosyal dekwa pou plis moun ta li l, epi kontinye sikile l. N ap wè kòman n kapab ede tèt nou san nou pa ret tann jouk nou tounen pwatann pou yon moun vin ede w.
While sleeping in the streets, there is a bunch of things you could do (where we get free dry palm leaves; you can go and cut branches of latànye fran, leaves of kapòt trees, coconut leaves and make our shelter in me for 2 hours. You stay there for the rain and against the sun at the same time. You put our clothes in it, and what you need (depending on the size you make it). Pandan w ap dòmi nan lari, gen yon dal bagay ou te kapab fè (kote ou jwenn tach gratis; ou gen dwa al koupe branch latànye fran, fèy kapòt, fèy kokoye epi w fè abri ou nan mwen de 2 è d tan. Konsa, ou pare lapli e solèy alafwa. You met rad nou ladan l, e sa ou bezwen (depan de gwosè ou fè l)
We would motivate everyone to do so. One can help the other. You will find creepers to tie the poles (if you don’t have ropes available), or latànye to tie them because you will need to tie the poles in order to hold everything. W ap jwenn lyann pou mare poto yo (si w pa gen kòd sou lamen), oubyen latànye pou mare yo paske w ap bezwen mare poto yo, yon fason pou kenbe tout bagay.

In summary, we encourage all those who would have other ideas to help the victims (in terms of temporary shelter) to circulate this information online, and all you know they would need to prepare in advance before any natural disaster.

An rezime, n ap ankouraje tout moun ki ta gen lòt ide pou ede viktim yo (an tèm abri pwovizwa) pou sikile enfòmasyon sa a an liy, e tout sa ou konnen yo ta bezwen prepare met la avan nenpòt katastwòf natirèl.
