Bien souvent, les jeunes prodiges ne vivent pas une vie normale, très tôt, la société s'accroche à eux, et semble ne  jamais en avoir assez. Nous nous concentrons sur leur talent, sans nous soucier réellement de leur personne ou de leurs besoins individuels. Michael fut un exemple vivide de ces jeunes prodiges.  

La cérémonie commémorative, en son honneur le 7 Juillet 2009, nous amène à faire allusion à Emile, un célèbre livre écrit par le français Jean-Jacques Rousseau, pour comprendre la vie de Michael. Il a eu une vie publique, qui a dénaturé son humanité et l’a transformé en une existence relative. Pendant plus de 40 ans, nous avons connu la légende mais pas l’homme dans sa totalité. Hier, c’était la première fois qu’on l’a  humanisé.

La cérémonie n’a pas été uniquement pour glorifier Michael Jackson, le plus grand artiste de tous les temps, celui qui a transcendé les barrières, et qui a transformé le monde musical et a séduit tout un chacun. Mais, au contraire, ceux qui le connaissaient le mieux nous ont conduit au cœur de «Michaelville» afin de nous donner un aperçu sur l’individu dans sa totalité. Ceux qui étaient proches de lui, ont peint l'image d'un homme remarquable qui aimait rire, raconter des histoires et manger du poulet frit de Kentucky.  

Durant toute sa carrière, Michael était comme une caricature d'un immense talent. Comment pouvait-on danser, chanter et atteindre le plus haut sommet musical sans être différent du commun des mortels? Comment pouvions-nous voir le côté humain de quelqu’un d’aussi talentueux qui a eu un chimpanzé comme compagnon, qui dort dans une chambre hyperbare, et qui porte des masques pour cacher son visage? Même Magic Johnson, une méga-star de basket-ball, a été émerveillé de voir Michael plonger dans un seau de poulet frit Kentucky. Cela nous prouve que nous n'avons jamais traité Michael en tant qu’homme normal et que sa célébrité nous a aveuglé au point où nous l’avons déshumanisé et considéré certains de ses actes comme  burlesques. 

Peut-être que ses nombreuses chirurgies plastiques n’étaient tout simplement que sa façon à lui de nous prouver son humanité. Ou peut-être, comme il l’avait maintes fois admis, il avait souffert vraiment du vitiligo, cette maladie de la peau qui cause des taches blanches peu attrayantes sur le corps, et qui contraignaient Michael à accélérer le processus pour  éliminer les zones pigmentées et uniformiser son teint. Même pas une fois, nous ne nous sommes pas occupés de son fort intérieur. Nous avons profité de ses lacunes et faiblesses pour le vilipender, le considérer comme extra-terrestre et créer des petites histoires à sensation sur sa personne.

On a du recourir à ceux qui lui étaient les plus proches, et avec les larmes aux yeux, pour réhabiliter les valeurs humaines à ce grand homme qui toute sa vie durant nous a émerveillé, fait danser et chanter. Son frère Marlon et son amie de vielle date Brook Shields et beaucoup d’autres, enfin, ont décrit l’homme dans son existence absolue. On a trop attendu pour finalement apprendre de la super star Kobe Bryan que Michael, dans le livre Guinness des Records du monde, est reconnu comme le plus grand philanthrope de l'industrie musicale. Un philanthrope de première heure, Michael a donné des sommes d'argent astronomiques à plus de 100 organismes de bienfaisance dans le monde entier. Et comme l'a aussi dit la représentante Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas: "Michael a travaillé avec les dirigeants africains dans la lutte contre le sida». Ses deux chansons: We Are the World et Heal the World sont des preuves éloquentes et irréfutables de son ardent esprit universel et humanitaire. 

Nous ne pouvons pas parler de Michael sans mentionner sa contribution dans l’amélioration des problèmes raciaux. Les tubes de Michael et l’aura qu’il projette ont influencé et ouvert la voie pour d’autres. Nul ne pouvait l’énoncer mieux qu’Al Sharpton, en disant: "Il a créé un niveau de confort, où les gens qui pensaient être différents étaient devenus interconnectés avec sa musique. Ces jeunes ont grandi et traversé leur adolescence, confortable avec Michael et 40 ans après se sentent encore confortables de voter pour un président noir. Grâce à Michael, Grâce à Michael, nous nous aimons les uns les autres. Michael nous a appris à nous aimer et nous entraider». 

Cette poignante et sereine cérémonie n’était pas un adieu dans le sens classique du terme, mais, de préférence un témoignage de son talent en tant qu’homme et génie, et aussi une occasion pour le remercier pour les services rendus, et l'humaniser pour le garder plus près de nous.  

Enfin, la commémoration était une réaffirmation que Michael en dehors de tout ce qu’on peut dire était un respectable être humain doublé d’un philanthrope hors pair. Le témoignage de sa fille en sanglots, avant de tomber dans les bras de sa tante Janet a authentifié, qu’en plus d’être un artiste incomparable, Michael, son papa, était un homme soucieux, responsable et aimable. Le service a été une célébration totale de sa vie et fera partie de notre mémoire collective à jamais.

Michael Jackson Memorial

Young prodigies quite often do not live a normal life, from early on society clings to them, and can never get enough of the talent that these children are born with.  We usually focus on their talent without taking our time to know the person. Michael is a vivid example of such a young prodigy.

The memorial service on the 7th of July, put together to honor his life induced us into alluding to Emile, a famous book written by the French Jean-Jacques Rousseau, to understand Michael’s life; a public life that denatured his humanity and transformed him into a relative one. For more than 40 years we knew the personality and the legend surrounding him but not the boy, the child and the man.  Yesterday’s service allowed the world to humanize Michael, for the first time.

The service was not about Michael Jackson, the greatest entertainer of all time, who transcended barriers, transformed the music world and transfixed fans throughout the globe. Instead, those who knew him best took us seamlessly to Michaelville in order to give us a glimpse of the person Michael in his basic essence. Those close to him painted a picture of a remarkable human being, who loved to laugh, tell jokes and enjoyed eating Kentucky fried chicken.

During his entire career, Michael was seen as a caricature with immense talent. How can someone that could dance, sing, and reach the highest musical peak be like us? How can we see the human side of someone  with so much talent  who had a chimpanzee as companion, sleeps in hyperbaric chamber, moonwalks the universe, and who wore masks to cover his face? Even Magic Johnson, a basketball mega-star, laughed over a memory of watching Michael diving in a bucket of Kentucky fried chicken. That proves to us that we never processed him as totally human and that fame had de-humanized within us his absolute existence in Rousseauesque terms.
 
Maybe his numerous facelifts and plastic surgeries were simply a way for him to prove his humanity. Or perhaps, as  Michael claimed , he was truly suffering from vitiligo, the skin disorder that causes unattractive white spots on the body, and was forced to speed up the process to even his skin tone.   Never once were we concerned about his inner life struggles. We simply used his short comings to label him as a talented freak, ridicule him as an extra-terrestrial being and create sensational stories about him.

It took those closest to him while fighting back tears, to humanize a man that for an entire life time was seen only in his relative existence. From his brother Marlon to his long-time friend Brook Shield, at last the real Michael came to light. It took us too long to learn from the super star Kobe Bryan that Michael appears in the Guinness book of World Records, as the biggest philanthropist in the music industry.  

A social trailblazer, Michael donated vast amount of money to more than 100 charities throughout the world.  As stated by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas: “Michael held court with African leaders in his bid to help slow the spread of AIDS”. His two songs: We Are the World and Heal the World underscore his humanitarian and global spirit.

For an entertainer of this magnitude, we expected his memorial to be more like a spectacle in which songs and dances would have been the order of the day. Ironically sentiment prevailed as the service was flooded with words of love, sweet, friendship, pure, laughter, heart, smile, I’ll be there,  joke, respect, we are the world, giver, uniter, healer, etc.

We can not talk about Michael without mentioning his contribution to race relations. Michael’s hits and his crossover appeal had influenced and paved the way for many. No one could say it better than Al Sharpton:  “He created a comfort level, where people that felt they were separate became interconnected with his music. ... Those young kids grew up from being teenage, comfortable fans of Michael's to being 40 years old and being comfortable to vote for a person of color to be the president of the United States of America. Michael did that. Michael made us love each other. Michael taught us to stand with each other.” - The Rev. Al Sharpton.
This poignant and serene memorial was not a farewell in the conventional sense. It was more a testimony of Michael’s unlimited talent in and out of the spot light, an occasion to thank him for his services, and opportunity to humanize and keep him close to us. 

In sum, the memorial was a reaffirmation that Michael was as human as we all are. He taught us that the legend was totally different from the man. His 11-year-old daughter’s testimony before dissolving into tears and falling into the embrace of her aunt Janet epitomized the notion, that besides being an unparalled entertainer, and a great philanthropist, Michael was a loving father. The memorial service was purely a celebration of Michael’s life and will be part of our collective memory forever.
